Netanyahu Confirms Sinwar’s Elimination, War Continues

On Thursday, October 17, 2024, social media platforms began circulating reports regarding the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar during an armed confrontation with Israeli military forces. Later that evening, Israeli security units leaked further information confirming Sinwar’s death, though official statements were withheld until Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the nation.

In his address, Netanyahu declared, “We have eliminated Yahya Sinwar, but this war is far from over. Hamas will not rule Gaza again.” He added that those who facilitate the release of Israeli detainees would be permitted to leave the conflict zone, but affirmed that military efforts would continue unabated until all captives are returned.

Following the announcement, crowds of Israeli citizens took to the streets in celebration, distributing sweets and playing national songs. Meanwhile, the families of Israeli prisoners expressed concern, urging restraint in the celebrations and caution regarding the repercussions of this development.

Sinwar had been appointed as Hamas’ leader after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, marking another critical juncture in the ongoing conflict.

Simultaneously, the Israeli military confirmed that five of its soldiers were killed, with numerous others wounded in military operations in southern Lebanon, after Hezbollah forces targeted members of the Golani Brigade on Wednesday night. The injured soldiers were evacuated to Israeli hospitals, but the army delayed the announcement until the families of the fallen were notified.
